Stress seems like an unavoidable part of life. We all face it. However, if you don’t take measures to reduce stress in your life, your health may be at risk. Stress weakens your immune system, your physical strength, and your decision making skills. This can lead to illness, injury, or other dangerous behavior that can have a negative impact on your life. Read on to learn simple ways to reduce stress in your life. Remember that a little stress is normal, but the more you can reduce it, the happier and healthier you will be.

  • Identify the source (work, family, etc)
  • Keep a stress journal to pinpoint when stress hits hardest
  • Avoid the stressor if possible (such as stressful acquaintances you can avoid socializing with)
  • Alter the stressor (change what you can control)
  • Adapt to the stressor (if you need to work with a stressful boss, find a way to adapt)
  • Accept the stressor (don’t spend time worrying about stressors you can’t fix, just accept them)
  • Say “no” without guilt to any invitation that stresses you out
  • Make a to-do list so you can cross off things as you accomplish them
  • Set reasonable daily, weekly, and monthly goals
  • Reward yourself for reaching goals
  • Let your feelings out by expressing them aloud or writing them down
  • Go for a calming walk and breathe in the fresh air
  • Use relaxing candles or music to take a quick break from stressors
  • Chat with a good friend about your stress, or even better, about something light and fun to clear your mind
  • Exercise and sweat out your stress with a good workout
  • Take part in a relaxing hobby like reading, gardening, watching a movie, yoga,  or other fun activities
  • Get comfort from a furry friend; if you don’t have a  pet, visit your local shelter for a quick cuddle to pick you up
  • Get a massage
  • Take a warm bath
  • Eat a healthy diet so your body will feel good
  • Find comfort in friends, family, and loved ones
  • Reduce caffeine, alcohol, and cigarette use
  • Get plenty of sleep
