Myths and Facts about Hip Replacement

As people age, various body parts don’t always function like they used to. It would be great if we could just replace parts as they wear out like with a car or washing machine. Unfortunately, that doesn’t work in most cases. However, the hip can be replaced! It isn’t quite a magical, mythical procedure, but it might just work magic in making you feel younger and healthier. If stiffness in your hip joint is keeping you from living your life, hip replacement might be for you!

Myth: Living with arthritis pain is just a necessary part of the aging process.
Fact: Those with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and other pains associated with arthritis can reduce daily pain through a hip replacement. You don’t have to live with the pain or stay confined to bed or wheelchair.  

Myth: Hip replacements are for the elderly.
Fact: Anyone can have hip damage due to weight, injury, tumor growth, inflammation, or arthritis. There is a minimally invasive hip replacement procedure for those under age 50, in good health, and at a healthy weight that requires only two small incisions. 

Myth: It will feel unnatural to have a new hip joint.
Fact: Medical science has made huge strides in the hip replacement procedure, material, and design. There are a variety of artificial ball-and-socket joints available to you. Your doctor will determine the best size, design, and material for a natural, comfortable, and flexible fit.

Myth: I should wait as long as possible to have a hip replacement.
Fact: You should discuss hip replacement options with your doctor to determine when to have one. Getting one sooner may result in faster and better recovery. Don’t put your life on hold; getting hip surgery sooner will get you back to doing what you love on your own two feet.

Myth: I won’t be able to exercise or move around after hip replacement.
Fact: Exercise after a hip replacement will help you build muscle strength and improve your range of motion and flexibility. You can bike, swim, walk, or even cross-country ski. Some activities such as jogging, running, and tennis can lead to damage of the new hip joint and should be avoided. Light activity can be great for your new joint, so don’t be afraid to get out there and live.
